Dear Fellow Copywriter,

Over the last 7 years, I’ve built a multi-6 figure copywriting business completely offline. 

I’ve never had to post “daily content”, or run ads, or send out cold emails. And I sure-as-shit have never done silly dances on TikTok to get clients. (Plus I doubt anyone would be interested in that anyway.)

However, I would be a liar if I told you that my copywriting business has always been “smooth”. 

When I discovered direct-response copywriting… 

I Was A Janitor Who Was Living Out Of A Motel

No portfolio. No connections… 

… and no clue as to how to make this “copywriting” thing work. 

I was basically a lamb in a minefield, munching on blood stained grass trying to get my first meal. 

So I did what anyone would do. 

I googled “how to get copywriting clients” and what discovered everyone was getting clients through “Cold outreach”.

I spent weeks collecting emails and sending them my “pitch” and the only thing that happened was I got a bunch of angry emails from secretaries telling me they’re not interested. 

Then I switched to cold calling. Same thing. 

Then I tried “networking”.

I would go to a “b2b event” and try to pitch the business owners there my services… but as you probably already know… they were trying to pitch me THEIR services. 

Nothing moved the needle. 

That’s when I reached out to Gary Halbert’s son, Kevin. 

I asked Kevin “Hey man, I’m a janitor, I’m somewhat good at copy, and I really really need clients. What should I do?” 

“Have You Ever Tried Sending Them Letters? That’s What Gary Would Do.”

And that’s where the idea originated. 

I wrote up about 100 letters, printed them out at the library, and then sent them off to business owners I found on the internet. 

And for the first time, I actually got a response. 

So I sent out 100 more, and got 2 people interested in hiring me. 

Then I kept the ball rolling until… I actually landed my first client.

Here’s The Advantages Of Direct Mail Over Everything Else:

First of all, everyone reads all of their own mail. Especially if it has YOUR name on it. 

So while the gatekeepers were monitoring an inbox & manning the phones, my direct mail pieces were slinking right passed them, straight into the arms of the business owner I was trying to reach. 

Think about it, if you can’t even get in contact with the person you want to hire you, your chances of getting hired are a big fat ZERO. 

Second of all, it’s a long form format. 

That means I can actually lay out a FULL case for myself in a letter. I can tell them why I’m the best person for the job. I can show them my results. Tell them my story, etc. 

Things like cold calling & email don’t allow you to do that. 

Third of all, it positions you much better than an email or social media would do. If you send someone a letter, they know it cost YOU money to do it… which insinuates you actually have some. 

Fourth, the letter itself is a showcase for your writing strength. I mean if you write a compelling letter to hire you, the natural conclusion for the prospect is that you can do the exact same thing for them. 

Last, but certainly not least, a letter allows you to control what the prospect sees of you. Every time you reach out to someone on the internet, they’re going to Google you. 

They’re going to look at your social media. And if you’re a mess, you’ve disqualified yourself. 

With a letter, you can hamper that, because they have very little information. They have to use the information presented INSIDE the letter to make their decision, and not the wide-world of the internet. 

That’s why every time my business has tanked, or I’ve gotten fired all of a sudden…

… all I do is print off 50 of my letters, sign em, stamp em, seal em, and walk the 10 ft to my mailbox and I’m off to the races again. 

It’s cheap, effective, and always gets me out of a bind. 

Plus, when you actually start making money, you can steamroll it like I did.
